Five Stars
Stranded on Mars, astronaut Mark Watney can’t stop laughing. His life expectancy is dire, his isolation is bleak, yet he perseveres in this well-researched survival thriller where NASA transcripts and maps craft a problem-solving adventure of great tenacity and ingenuity. The insider knowledge at play is astonishing, a science geek’s dream, and it’s used to create a sequence of terrifying, page-turning surprises.

Getting a roller-coaster to perform skateboard tricks, where you grind the rails and perform jumps, is fun, but it puts you in control which is a comfort thrill rides try to avoid. You want to feel like you’re in the hands of a maniac and the only way you get that is by downloading custom levels made by other players willing to ignore the rules. An added demolition game, where you launch destructive balls at buildings, helps but has little to do with roller-coasters or anything this game’s title would suggest.
